Tourism and higher standards of living on Barbados are increasing pressure for residential subdivisions, golf courses and tourist resorts on prime agricultural land and environmentally sensitive areas. The National Physical Development Plan prepared by Urban Strategies establishes an environmental framework for the island and detailed Community Plans for five growth areas. Our study involved a comprehensive review of economic, land use, environmental and infrastructure issues; an extensive public consultation process; and an assessment of three development options.
