Exhibition Place and Ontario Place
1989 to Present
Toronto, Ontario
Since 1989, Urban Strategies has advised on the planning and economic development of Exhibition Place and Ontario Place, two prominent sites on Toronto’s waterfront. The sites, which until recently consisted largely of seasonal, recreation-oriented destinations, are playing an ever-increasing role in the city’s economy and culture. We advised on the planning, siting and urban design of the new National Trade Centre, a 1.2 million square foot facility that marks the first stage of Exhibition Place’s revitalization. We have also helped design transit infrastructure that improves access to the sites from downtown. Focusing on feasibility and design, we have assisted the Board of Governors in studying numerous development proposals for the sites, including a proposed arena for the Maple Leafs hockey team and other major sports facilities. Urban Strategies was subsequently retained as the lead planner for the Master Plan at Festival Plaza.
