Mary Castel

Director of Marketing and Communications

With a background in corporate communications, Mary leads business development initiatives, media and client relations, and Urban Strategies' RFP and proposal process. She has extensive experience in using online tools to expand the traditional consultation process, including social media, blogging, interactive mapping applications, and other mechanisms. She recently worked with Queen’s University to integrate comprehensive suite of social media tools into a public consultation strategy for their award-winning Campus Master Plan project. She has developed similar strategies for London’s Back to the River design competition, the University of Toronto Secondary Plan, and Strathcona County’s Growth Strategy near Edmonton. She co-led the development of Community CompassTM, an easy-to-use, proprietary online engagement/survey tool incorporating interactive mapping functions that provides data-rich, GIS-based information on how users interact with their environment. The Compass has been used on projects for Princeton University, MyMalton and Vision Cooksville (Mississauga) and the Realize Troy Comprehensive Plan. She leads the communication strategy for the popular Big City Big Ideas public lecture series, and directs the Urban Strategies Academy, which is an ongoing series of workshops, labs, and field trips designed to foster a culture of learning at Urban Strategies. Mary manages the Urban Strategies online assets, develops corporate communications, and is an organized and innovative event planner.
