Surrey Centre Block Master Plan
2018 - 2019
Surrey, British Columbia
Centre Block is located at the heart of Surrey’s planned downtown — a place expected to grow and transform into a major regional centre over the next 20 years. Centre Block is next to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station and a major regional bus exchange, adjacent to significant civic buildings including Surrey’s City Hall and City Centre library and neighbours the major institutional presence of Simon Fraser University (SFU).
Working collaboratively with the SCDC, the City and SFU, Urban Strategies led a multi-disciplinary team to create an implementation-based Master Plan which articulates an integrated approach to the expected 2 Million sq. ft. of development that Centre Block will realize. With the City, SCDC and SFU working together, a collaborative redevelopment will allow the realization of a greater collective city-building impact, shaping the future character and capacity of Surrey’s downtown. The Plan illustrates how to develop the Centre Block in a way that will support future investment and growth as well as achieve broad public objectives including integration with transit infrastructure, the creation of spaces for new public open spaces and the establishment of an iconic destination that will contribute to Surrey’s identity as the region’s next major centre. Centre Block will be a place of intersection between civic spaces, institutional and commercial uses creating opportunities to foster innovation and support Surrey’s local economy.
